Padania, an alternative name for the Po Valley, in Northern Italy was a mere geographical designation until it became the flagship of a new nation imagined by the populist and separatist party ‘North League’. I always felt uncomfortable if not horrified about the ideological hijack of the semantics of ’Padania’, my region.
‘I was born on the River Po’ is an attempt to resew a new narration out of my grandmother point of view: she sailed and fished in the Po water, farmed its fertile shores, collected its wild herbs and feasted on its banks.

Padania, nome alternativo per la Pianura Padana, nel Nord Italia era una semplice designazione geografica fino a quando negli anni ’90 divenne un termine usato a intendere una nuova nazione immaginata dal partito populista e separatista “Lega Nord”. Mi sono sempre sentita a disagio se non inorridita dal dirottamento ideologico della semantica della “Padania”, che è la mia regione.
Io sul Po ci sono nata è un tentativo di riappropriazione attraverso una nuova narrazione dal punto di vista di mia nonna che: ha navigato e pescato nell’acqua del Po, ha coltivato le sue fertili coste, raccolto le sue erbe selvatiche e banchettato sulle sue rive.
