I did not begin this project with the intention of making a work about the River Po.
It emerged from a conversation with my grandmother. During a series of interviews about her life, I realised that the river kept resurfacing in her stories. I decided to accompany her to the place where the Parma River meets the Po. Returning there together, I witnessed how the landscape became an active participant in the conversation: every path, tree and bend in the river brought back memories that had not emerged during the interviews themselves.
That experience transformed my artistic research. I began to question the role that places can play in the formation of memory, and how returning to a lived environment can reveal relationships between body, experience and landscape. Since then, I have considered walking, listening and spending time in a place to be fundamental methods within my artistic practice.
The title comes from a sentence my grandmother spontaneously says during one of our conversations: “I was born on the River Po.” Rather than referring literally to her birthplace, the sentence expresses a profound relationship with the river, which shaped her work, everyday life and way of inhabiting the world.
Only later did I realise that this personal statement also resonated with the political history of the word Padania. During the 1990s, a geographical designation was transformed into the symbolic territory of a separatist political project. Rather than opposing that narrative directly, this work returns to lived experience, asking how a river can be remembered, inhabited and transmitted through bodies, gestures and relationships across generations.

Non ho iniziato questo progetto per raccontare il fiume Po.
È nato da una conversazione con mia nonna. Durante una serie di interviste dedicate alla sua vita, mi sono accorta che il fiume continuava ad affiorare nei suoi racconti. Ho deciso allora di accompagnarla nel luogo in cui il torrente Parma confluisce nel Po. Tornando insieme in quei luoghi, ho osservato come il paesaggio diventasse un interlocutore attivo: ogni sentiero, albero o ansa del fiume faceva riemergere ricordi che non erano emersi prima.
Quell'esperienza ha trasformato la mia ricerca. Ho iniziato a interrogarmi sul ruolo che i luoghi possono avere nella costruzione della memoria e su come il ritorno in uno spazio vissuto possa rendere percepibili relazioni tra corpo, esperienza e paesaggio. Da allora considero il camminare, l'ascolto e il tempo trascorso in un luogo come strumenti fondamentali della mia pratica artistica.
Il titolo nasce da una frase pronunciata da mia nonna durante una delle nostre conversazioni: «Io sul Po ci sono nata». Più che indicare un luogo di nascita in senso letterale, quella frase esprime un legame profondo con il fiume, che ha plasmato il suo lavoro, la sua quotidianità e il suo modo di abitare il mondo.
Solo in seguito ho compreso come questa affermazione personale entrasse in risonanza con la storia politica della parola Padania. Negli anni Novanta un termine geografico venne trasformato nel simbolo di un progetto politico separatista. Questo lavoro non nasce per contrapporsi direttamente a quella narrazione, ma per riportare l'attenzione sull'esperienza vissuta, interrogandosi su come un fiume possa essere ricordato, abitato e trasmesso attraverso i corpi, i gesti e le relazioni tra generazioni.
